Musical Variations in Shakuhachi Honkyoku:

Analysis and Interpretation of San'ya in the Lineage of Yokoyama Katsuya

Below are links to recorded performances of San'ya variants that I referenced for my PhD thesis research. This research focuses on San'ya variants transmitted by the Kokusai Shakuhachi Kenshūkan (International Shakuhachi Training Centre).

The list of analysed recordings, including reference codes that I use for each recording, is here.

Click the titles for each San'ya variant below for links to the recordings, which are presented as audio/video melograms.

San'an 産安

San'ya 三谷

In my thesis, I refer to this version as MT San'ya; 'MT' is an abbreviation of 'mitsutani', an alternative reading for the characters used in the title. In English, this version is sometimes referred to as 'three valleys San'ya'.

San'ya 山谷

In my thesis, I refer to this version as YT San'ya; 'YT' is an abbreviation of 'yamatani', an alternative reading for the characters used in the title. In English, this version is sometimes referred to as 'mountain valley San'ya'.
